The current-sensing master outlet has 2 selectable switching thresholds (18w or 35w) to sense when the control device (typically a television or computer) is on or off, and it then switches the controlled outlets on or off accordingly to prevent unnecessary power use from devices plugged into those outlets, eliminating what are known as vampire loads. For secondary surge protection it has both a telephone/data jack and an coax cable jack to protect a television or cable box.
